Christian Families Flee Village After Blasphemy Accusation Sparks Mob Attack in Pakistan - Revival Nation News - Blog

A Christian man’s home and business were set ablaze in Pakistan after a blasphemy accusation triggered unrest and forced more than 35 Christian families to flee their village, according to local sources.

Police arrested 40-year-old Kamran Masih on Oct. 8 after local Muslims accused him of sharing a blasphemous video through WhatsApp groups. Masih, a father of three, operated a small pharmacy beside his home in Gharial Kalan village, located in Punjab Province’s Sheikhupura District.

As news of his arrest spread, Christian residents began leaving the area out of concern that the accusation could provoke collective violence. Their fears were realized the following day when dozens of Muslims reportedly gathered outside Masih’s property to protest. Some members of the crowd then set fire to his shop and adjoining residence.

Police intervention prevented the mob from damaging additional Christian-owned properties, a source familiar with the situation said. A large police contingent was subsequently deployed to protect residents and restore order.

A representative from the Sheikhupura District police chief’s office said authorities were investigating the violence and would pursue action against everyone involved. The specific provisions of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws invoked against Masih remained unclear.

Ejaz Alam Augustine, a Christian member of the Punjab Assembly, said more than 15 protesters accused of participating in the arson had been arrested. He added that Christian lawmakers maintained contact with police and district officials throughout the crisis.

A relative of Masih expressed shock over the violence, saying Christians and Muslims had historically maintained peaceful relations in the village. He described Masih as a respected and sensible community member and said the family did not understand how the accusation arose.

The attack follows other recent blasphemy-related disturbances in Karachi and Punjab, where Christian families were threatened or forced to leave their homes. In those cases, intervention by police, paramilitary personnel and local Muslim residents helped prevent wider violence.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly warned that Pakistan’s blasphemy laws can be exploited in personal disputes and disproportionately endanger religious minorities. Although the country has not carried out a state execution for blasphemy, accusations alone have led to mob attacks, extrajudicial killings and prolonged detention.

Open Doors ranked Pakistan eighth on its 2026 World Watch List, citing systemic discrimination, forced conversions, mob violence, and continued impunity for attacks against Christians.
