Attacks On Christopher Columbus Are Attacks On America's Foundations - Revival Nation - Blog

This Columbus Day, it’s time to set the record straight: our ancestors, including Christopher Columbus, were not the villains some would have you believe. They were heroes who laid the foundation for the American experiment. The attacks we’ve seen in recent years against Columbus and other historical figures aren’t just about individuals; they’re assaults on the values, courage, and vision that built the United States.

For decades, American schoolchildren memorized the rhyme: “In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” This simple verse reflects a truth: the story of the United States begins with Columbus’s daring voyage. Yet, in recent years, academics, left-leaning media, and certain politicians have recast this heroic figure as a villain.

Why has a man with a 500-year legacy of courage and discovery suddenly become a target? Why has Columbus Day, once a celebration of exploration and achievement, been reframed by some as a moment to vilify a man who changed the course of history? The answer lies in a broader ideological shift on the left that seeks to erase admiration for America’s heritage in favor of a narrative of shame.

But the truth about Christopher Columbus is far more inspiring than his detractors would have you believe. Here are three lesser-known facts about the man that highlight his character and contributions:

  • Columbus Opposed Exploitation and Freed Enslaved Women

Contrary to claims that Columbus was a ruthless oppressor, historical records show he took steps to combat exploitation. In the Caribbean, Columbus encountered native practices of sexual exploitation and, later, trafficking initiated by rebellious Spanish settlers. As governor, he worked to curb these abuses, even liberating women from villages who had been forced into servitude.

For example, in his governorship of Hispaniola, Columbus issued orders to protect native women from mistreatment, though his authority was often undermined by disobedient settlers. His efforts reflect a commitment to justice, even in a complex and turbulent colonial environment.

  • Columbus Sought Gold for Noble Purposes

Columbus’s quest for gold is often misrepresented as mere greed. In reality, his motivations were deeply tied to his faith and a broader vision for Christendom.

Columbus aimed to fund evangelistic efforts to spread Christianity and to finance a crusade to retake Jerusalem from Muslim control, a goal shared by many in Europe at the time. In his writings, Columbus expressed that his voyages were not just about exploration but about securing resources to advance spiritual and geopolitical aims.

This context reveals a man driven by purpose, not personal enrichment.

  • Columbus’s Faith Guided His Mission

Columbus was a devout Christian who believed his journey was divinely inspired.

In his Book of Prophecies, he wrote: “Who doubts that this illumination was from the Holy Spirit? I attest that he [the Spirit], with marvelous rays of light consoled me through the holy sacred Scriptures…encouraging me to proceed, and, continually, without ceasing for a moment, they inflame me with a sense of great urgency. Our Lord wished to perform the clearest miracle.”

His trust in God’s guidance gave him the courage to undertake a voyage that many deemed impossible, crossing an uncharted ocean to connect two worlds. This faith-driven resolve underscores the magnitude of his achievement.

For nearly five centuries, Christopher Columbus was celebrated as a hero who accomplished what no one before him had dared to attempt: navigating the Atlantic to establish contact between Europe and the Americas.

His voyages in 1492 and beyond marked a turning point in world history, sparking an era of exploration, exchange, and cultural development. Yet, today, Columbus faces unprecedented criticism. Some go so far as to portray him as a genocidal figure whilst ignoring the complexities of his era and the undeniable impact of his discoveries. His monumental achievement should be cherished, not smeared or demonized.

No other American holiday has seen such a dramatic shift, from honoring a venerated explorer to vilifying him. The revisionism at play today overlooks the challenges Columbus faced: navigating uncharted waters, managing fractious crews, and governing in a chaotic new world. His mistakes, often exaggerated, must be weighed against his extraordinary contributions. As historian Samuel Eliot Morison wrote in Admiral of the Ocean Sea (1942), Columbus’s navigational genius and perseverance laid the groundwork for the modern age. His brilliance and discovery benefitted the world, that is worth celebrating.

Thankfully, leaders like former President Donald Trump have defended Columbus’s legacy.

In a 2025 proclamation, Trump declared: “Columbus’s journey carried thousands of years of wisdom, philosophy, reason, and culture across the Atlantic into the Americas — paving the way for the ultimate triumph of Western civilization less than three centuries later on July 4, 1776.” This recognition reminds us that Columbus’s voyages were a cornerstone of the values; freedom, exploration, and resilience, all of which define America.

Columbus’s critics often focus on the negative consequences of European contact with the Americas, such as disease and conflict, which were tragic but not unique to Columbus’s actions. These outcomes were part of a broader historical process that no single individual could control.

Blaming Columbus alone ignores the contributions of countless others who followed in his wake, building the foundations of the modern world. His detractors also fail to acknowledge the context of the 15th century, a time of competing empires, limited knowledge, and harsh realities.

This Columbus Day, let’s reject the revisionist narrative and celebrate a man whose courage and vision changed history. Attacks on Columbus are attacks on the very foundations of our nation, a nation built on the boldness to explore, the faith to persevere, and the determination to create something new.

Columbus forged a path that led to the birth of America. regardless of what revisionists say, he is still a hero.
