Socialism’s Rise Exposes America’s Growing Civic Education Crisis

Support for socialism among young Americans is increasing, raising urgent questions about what colleges and schools are teaching, and what they have neglected to teach, about history, economics, and constitutional government.

Many students graduate with advanced credentials but little understanding of the institutions that preserve American liberty. Without a firm grasp of constitutional limits, private property, free enterprise, and the failures of centralized power, young adults can become vulnerable to political promises that sound compassionate but ignore economic reality.

This problem cannot be solved merely by adding another partisan course to the curriculum. America needs a renewed form of civic education that prepares students to think before telling them what to think.

Such an education should be “pre-partisan,” grounding students in the principles and historical developments they need to evaluate competing political claims responsibly. That includes studying the Constitution, federalism, separation of powers, individual rights, and the responsibilities accompanying citizenship. It must also include basic economics: how markets coordinate human activity, why incentives matter, and what happens when governments attempt to control production and distribution.

History offers repeated warnings about socialist systems that promised equality but delivered scarcity, coercion, and concentrated political power. Students should examine that record honestly rather than encountering socialism only as an abstract ideal detached from its real-world consequences.

At the same time, meaningful civic instruction must do more than defend one economic system. It should teach students how to read primary sources, evaluate evidence, engage opposing arguments, and distinguish legitimate constitutional government from raw political power.

The battle over socialism is therefore part of a deeper struggle over America’s national memory. A generation disconnected from the foundations of liberty will be poorly equipped to preserve them.

If Americans want to resist socialism’s growing appeal, slogans and campaign speeches will not be enough. The nation must rebuild an educational culture that forms informed citizens capable of recognizing both freedom’s blessings and its demands.

America’s institutions cannot sustain themselves. They depend upon people who understand them, and who possess the wisdom, courage, and conviction to defend them.
