Planned Parenthood Eligible for Taxpayer Funding Again After GOP Ban Expires

On July 5, 2026, a one-year ban on federal funding for the abortion giant Planned Parenthood expired. Republicans controlled Congress. They had a pro-life majority. They promised action. And they did nothing.
Now Planned Parenthood clinics can once again bill Medicaid for contraception, health screenings, and the infrastructure that enables nearly half a million abortions annually. The hard-won victory of last year, when taxpayers were finally freed from funding an industry that profits from killing babies, evaporated without a fight. Federal dollars totaling more than $800 million in annual Medicaid payments will now flow directly to the nation’s largest abortion provider.
This isn’t a policy disagreement. This is a betrayal of the pro-life voters who gave Republicans control of Congress with explicit expectations about protecting unborn life.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro Life America, didn’t mince words when addressing Republican leadership: “Thanks to Majority Leader Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, and our pro-life majority in Congress, we saw a historic victory last year when taxpayers were no longer forced to prop up an industry that profits from killing babies in the womb. Now this hard-won progress stands on the brink of reversal.” She called on Republicans to fix the problem immediately through reconciliation and new pro-life measures upon their return to Washington.
The criticism from younger pro-life activists is even sharper. Students for Life Action gave every legislator an F on its pro-life report card. Leader Kristan Hawkins explained the stakes with clarity: “The bottom line, pro-life voters want to see healthcare money invested with those who intend for their patients to survive with their lives and fertility intact.” Healthcare funding is a tool, she emphasized, and Republicans just chose to use it against life.
Dannenfelser stated what should be obvious: “Defunding Big Abortion is now the default expectation of the pro-life movement. When they return to D.C., Republicans must do all they can through reconciliation to once again block taxpayer dollars from Planned Parenthood and abortion businesses.”
