A Stay-at-Home Mom Won American Idol, She Worshipped to Celebrate - Revival Nation News - Blog

Hannah Harper isn’t your typical reality TV winner; the 25-year-old mother of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, claimed the Season 24 crown on American Idol this week, and when the show’s producers cued up her big finale moment, she didn’t reach for a radio-ready pop single. Instead, Harper stood on the Idol stage in tears, surrounded by family and fellow contestants, and sang Chris Tomlin’s worship song “At The Cross.”

The choice was right on brand for Hannah Harper. Throughout the season, the stay-at-home mom wore her Christian faith openly, treating the show’s massive platform as something more than a career launch.

After cracking the Top 5, she reflected on what the experience had meant to her, telling Us Weekly that being able to talk about her beliefs in front of a national audience felt like a genuine privilege.

Her journey to the finale was anything but conventional. She opened the competition with an original song called “String Cheese:” a raw, personal piece about her experience with postpartum depression and the spiritual weight she’d found in motherhood. Not only did it move judge Carrie Underwood to tears but it quickly took on a life of its own beyond the show, reaching millions online.

Because of the weight of the message her song carried, mothers began sharing their own stories using the song online and it climbed iTunes charts, and other artists like Martina McBride and Kristin Chenoweth took notice.

The runner-up, Jordan McCullough, was himself an outspoken believer who opened his audition with CeCe Winans’ “Goodness of God” and wrapped his run on the show with Smokie Norful’s “Dear God,” making this perhaps the most openly faith-forward finale in the show’s history.

For Harper, the victory lap looked less like a star is born and more like a testimony.
