American Missionary Pilot Kevin Rideout Freed After Months in Niger Captivity

American missionary pilot Kevin Rideout has reportedly been released after spending months in captivity following his abduction in Niger last October.

Two U.S. officials told The New York Times that Rideout is now in American custody and traveling back to the United States. He is reportedly under the care of the FBI and appears to be in good health.

Rideout serves with Serving In Mission, a North Carolina-based Evangelical organization. For years, he flew missionaries, ministry personnel, and essential equipment throughout West Africa, helping multiple Christian organizations carry out their work in the region.

Three men reportedly abducted Rideout near the Bravia Hotel in central Niamey, only a few hundred meters from Niger’s presidential palace. Authorities have not publicly identified his captors or disclosed where he was held. The circumstances surrounding his release also remain unclear.

Public information about Rideout’s condition and location had been limited since his kidnapping. During that period, Christians, churches, and prominent Evangelical leaders, including Franklin Graham, urged believers to pray for his safety and freedom.

The Trump administration had designated securing Rideout’s release as a top priority. Following his abduction, the U.S. Embassy in Niamey warned Americans of a “heightened risk of kidnapping” across Niger.

The West African nation has faced continuing instability since a military coup removed its elected government in July 2023.

Rideout’s reported freedom brings long-awaited relief to his family, fellow missionaries, and believers who faithfully prayed throughout his captivity. Further details are expected as U.S. authorities review the case and confirm the circumstances of his return.
