TikTok Agrees to $400 Million Settlement Over Children’s Privacy Violations

TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, have agreed to pay $400 million to resolve federal allegations that the social media platform violated U.S. children’s online privacy laws, the Department of Justice announced Friday.

The federal government sued TikTok in 2024 following an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission. The lawsuit alleged that the platform violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting and retaining personal information from young users without properly notifying parents or obtaining their consent.

Federal officials also claimed TikTok knowingly allowed children to establish accounts and communicate with adults on the platform beginning in 2019.

Under the settlement, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately. The remaining $100 million will be paid after a court vacates an earlier consent decree involving Musical.ly, TikTok’s predecessor. According to the Justice Department, the agreement represents one of the largest settlements ever secured in a case involving federal children’s privacy protections.

The department acknowledged that TikTok has since made significant changes, including stronger age-based controls, expanded parental supervision tools, and revisions to its management structure.

“Those developments have materially advanced the public interests underlying the Department’s litigation and have strengthened protections for millions of American families,” the agency said.

The settlement comes after TikTok completed a restructuring designed to separate its U.S. operations from ByteDance amid national security concerns. A joint venture led largely by American investors now manages the platform, while ByteDance retains a 19.9% minority stake.

The case underscores growing demands for technology companies to protect children from unchecked data collection and potentially dangerous online interactions.
