Christians Must Prepare for AI Impersonation Crisis: American Bible Society Warns Churches

Meta’s hasty pullback of its Muse Image tool revealed a troubling reality: artificial intelligence can now impersonate real people convincingly, and the Church is unprepared. The American Bible Society is warning Christian leaders that the “impersonation problem is already here, not coming.”

In July, Meta launched Muse Image, an AI tool that generated images from public Instagram accounts. Within three days, facing backlash from Hollywood actors, SAG-AFTRA, and the Creative Artists Agency over privacy and consent violations, Meta discontinued the @-mention feature. The episode exposed a fundamental problem: technology companies move fast, users get hurt, and society scrambles to respond.

But the real danger isn’t Instagram filters. It’s deepfakes designed to steal from churches.

Bryce Allison, chief technology officer at the American Bible Society, warned that AI-generated videos are already soliciting donations in pastors’ names. “The fakes don’t even have to be good to work,” he said. Churches are receiving reports of AI videos impersonating their leaders, requesting money from unsuspecting congregants.

“Every ministry needs an answer to ‘How would our people know this is really from us?’ and the time to work that out is before it happens,” Allison stressed.

The deeper issue runs darker than financial fraud. When AI uses someone’s likeness without consent, it treats that person—made in God’s image—as “raw material rather than someone with inherent dignity.” This isn’t just a technical problem. It’s a spiritual one.

Allison identified another crisis: information ecosystems. “Most people are spending far more time inside algorithmically curated feeds than inside any church’s teaching, and those systems optimize for engagement, which is not the same thing as maturity.” The algorithms are winning the battle for human attention and spiritual formation.

For ministries, the threat is immediate. Staff handle pastoral conversations, counseling notes, benevolence requests, and donor records. Few realize that pasting any of this into a consumer chatbot is a confidentiality breach. One staff member careless with data could expose an entire congregation.

Allison’s prescription is clear: start with data. Train staff explicitly. Establish protocols before deepfakes arrive in your inbox. Create verification systems so congregants can distinguish real from fake communications.

The Church must wake up. AI impersonation isn’t a future threat—it’s happening now. Every pastor, every church administrator, every ministry leader must ask: How will my people know this is really from me? Answer that question before an AI does.
