Why the Death Penalty is Pro-Life - Revival Nation News - Blog

The death penalty, when justly delivered, is profoundly pro-life, wrote Dallas Pastor Josh Howerton. Whilst this perspective may seem counterintuitive in modern debates, it perfectly aligns with the Biblical understanding of the sanctity of life, which prioritizes the protection of innocent life above all.

Biblical Pro-Life: Protecting Innocent Life, Not Opposing All Killing

To be Biblically pro-life doesn’t mean opposing the taking of any life under all circumstances. Instead, it means staunchly opposing the unjust taking of innocent life, such as in abortion or murder.

There are clear Biblical distinguishments between murder (the unlawful, malicious killing of the innocent) and other forms of killing that can be justified or even commanded by God. This will shock the crowd within the church that has been raised on sermons of “tolerance” and emphasizing “love” over the Biblical mandate to speak truth in love. This, however, does not remove nor modify the truth of God’s Word.

This distinction appears in the Sixth Commandment: “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13, often rendered this way in modern translations to reflect the Hebrew word ratsach, which specifically denotes unlawful or malicious killing, rather than a blanket prohibition on all killing). The Hebrew language uses different terms for general killing versus murder, allowing for exceptions like self-defense, just war, and capital punishment.

The Old Testament includes instances where God commands or permits killing, such as in warfare or as punishment for certain crimes and this pattern continues into the New Testament.

In Romans 13:1-4, Paul describes the role of governing authorities as instituted by God: they are to punish wrongdoers and “bear the sword,” this is a clear reference to the power of lethal force, including the death penalty, as “God’s servant, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”

The Death Penalty as a Just and Pro-Life Measure

Biblically, the death penalty is presented as the appropriate consequence for murder. Genesis 9:6 states: “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.” This command underscores the gravity of taking innocent life: it assaults God’s image-bearers; thus, it demands a proportionate response to uphold justice and affirm the value of life.

Far from devaluing life, the death penalty, when it is justly applied, protects innocent people by removing those who have demonstrated a willingness to murder others and preventing them from causing further harm. A dear friend of mine would still have his life if those in authority had this Biblical stance on those willing to commit murder.

It also serves as a powerful deterrent. The Bible implies that severe, visible punishment discourages crime; public execution in ancient Israel was meant to instill fear and prevent others from committing similar acts (e.g., Deuteronomy 13:11, 21:21).

From this view, one reason violent crime persists at high levels is the infrequent or inconsistent application of the death penalty for murder, weakening its terrifying warning to potential offenders.

Justice Upholds the Sanctity of Life

Howerton went on to post about “modern Christianity and how, no matter the discomfort level of hearing the truth on this subject, “Biblical Commands > modern research always.”

He stated how he is “beginning to realize about 95% of Christians’ misunderstandings about government stem from this one thing: the Bible differentiates between the role of the INDIVIDUAL and the role of the STATE. The State’s role is not mercy. It is justice (Romans 13, 1 Peter).”

“When governments take up the role of the individual and start doing mercy instead of justice… “mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent.” That is how you get (progressive) criminal justice systems that let 25x-incarcerated violent criminals out, and they end up slitting people’s throats on public transports,” he stated.

Ultimately, the death penalty isn’t about vengeance or a disregard for life; it is about justice that safeguards the innocent and honors God’s design for human dignity.

A truly pro-life stance, rooted in Scripture, defends the vulnerable, most especially the unborn and law-abiding, whilst recognizing that those who forfeit their right to life through heinous crimes face just consequences.

When justly delivered, capital punishment isn’t anti-life but a necessary guardian of life itself.
