In a holiday season dominated by blockbuster sequels like Avatar: Fire and Ash, a humble animated faith-based film has emerged as an unexpected giant-slayer.

David, the new musical animation from Angel Studios, has not only captivated family audiences but shattered records, proving that stories of faith and courage can still conquer the modern cinema landscape.

Released on December 19, 2025, David retells the iconic biblical tale of the shepherd boy who becomes king. Directed by Phil Cunningham and Brent Dawes, the film follows young David from his quiet life tending sheep to his legendary confrontation with Goliath, his rise in King Saul’s court, and his eventual anointing as Israel’s leader.

What sets David apart is its stunning animation quality, often compared to DreamWorks or Disney standards, with vibrant visuals, detailed landscapes, and fluid action sequences that bring ancient Israel to life. The musical elements are equally brilliant. Featuring original songs by Grammy winner Jonas Myrin, including heartfelt duets like “Tapestry” and uplifting anthems such as “I Will Not Be Afraid.”

Richard Roeper of RogerEbert.com called it "a well-produced, visually impressive, character-driven fable," awarding it 3 out of 4 stars. Common Sense Media hailed it as a "captivatingly heartfelt and deeply moving tale" worthy of standing alongside classics like The Prince of Egypt.

But the real story is at the box office. Opening against the massive Avatar: Fire and Ash, David grossed an estimated $22 million in its debut weekend, Angel Studios’ biggest opening ever, surpassing even the phenomenon Sound of Freedom. It also claimed the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a faith-based animated film, beating out earlier 2025 releases like The King of Kings. By December 21, early totals had reached over $22 million domestically, fueled by Angel’s “Pay it Forward” program and strong word-of-mouth from faith communities.

This success comes despite a rocky production history, including distribution disputes that delayed the film from its original November slot. Yet, like its titular hero armed with just a sling and stones, David has defied the odds. As one reviewer noted, it “blew my expectations out of the water,” raising the bar for faith-based animation and signaling a bright future for uplifting family stories on the big screen.

These numbers reveal just how much people are looking for inspired art and David reminds us that sometimes the underdog wins, all whilst inspiring millions along the way. If you haven’t seen it yet, grab the family and head to theaters this holiday season. You might just find a little more faith in the power of storytelling.
