Before the Breakthrough Becomes a Weapon: We Need a Biosecurity Wake-Up Call

Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute have crossed a dangerous threshold. Using artificial intelligence, they designed complete viral genomes from scratch. Of 285 AI-generated designs, 16 produced functioning viruses. The peer-reviewed research was published in Science. This wasn’t a bioweapon experiment, but it reveals something terrifying: the barrier between biological knowledge and biological capability is crumbling.

For decades, bioweapons remained extraordinarily difficult to create. Yes, they required scientists and laboratories, but they also demanded reliable production, weaponization, stable storage, and effective delivery. The Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo had trained scientists, considerable resources, and sophisticated labs. Yet its attempts to weaponize botulinum toxin and anthrax in the early 1990s failed. Difficulty was a safety buffer.

Artificial intelligence is systematically removing that buffer.

In June, leading AI figures including Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei signed an open letter warning that AI systems already outperform Ph.D.-level virologists on highly technical questions. Someone lacking years of specialist training may soon access sophisticated biological knowledge from an AI chatbot. The knowledge barrier is eroding.

But the state threat is worse. A hostile government already possesses trained scientists, secure laboratories, genomic databases, synthesis equipment, and military delivery expertise. AI doesn’t need to create that infrastructure. It only needs to accelerate it, making programs faster, cheaper, more capable, and harder to detect. According to a RAND study from April 2026, advanced AI could enable “more sophisticated capabilities for both state and non-state actors.”

Congress must act while chokepoints still exist. Screening and record-keeping for DNA and RNA synthesis orders, customer verification, and safeguards for synthesis equipment are essential. Digital designs must become physical material; synthesis is the clearest place to detect suspicious activity. These safeguards already have broad backing from leaders in AI, biotechnology, biosecurity, and national security.

But there’s a deeper issue. Scripture warns, “Whatever one sows, that will he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Scientific knowledge isn’t evil, and technology that saves lives should be welcomed. Yet possessing the power to do something has never meant mankind ought to do it. “A machine may design,” but man must still answer for what is built.

The barrier between capability and catastrophe is weakening. The time to strengthen it is now—before today’s AI breakthrough becomes tomorrow’s weapon.
