Every California Democrat Votes to Cover Child Sex-Change Procedures

California’s State Assembly passed AB 1876, a bill that mandates insurance plans cover puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender surgeries for children.

The vote fell squarely along party lines: 56 Democrats voting yes, 17 Republicans voting no. The vote was unanimous amongst Democrats with no one breaking ranks or dissenting.

Scripture is unambiguous: children are a gift from God, fearfully and wonderfully made in His image (Psalm 139:14). To chemically or surgically alter a child’s body in the name of gender ideology is in no way compassion but a profound moral evil, and government has no business mandating its funding.

Firstly, chemical and surgical alterations cause irreversible harm to vulnerable children.

Puberty blockers disrupt normal biological development in ways that aren’t fully understood, and cross-sex hormones and surgeries cause permanent, life-altering changes to bodies that are still growing.

Additionally, children cannot consent to sterilization or the loss of healthy organs. No matter how it is packaged politically, the state of California just voted to ensure these procedures are financially accessible to families seeking them for children, thus removing one of the last barriers standing between a confused child and permanent damage.

Second, this move weaponizes the power of government against the family.

When the state compels insurance coverage of these procedures, it doesn’t merely permit them, it actively subsidizes and normalizes them. This is the government placing its full institutional weight behind an ideology that tells children their bodies are wrong and that doctors with scalpels and syringes are the solution.

Parents who hold biblical convictions about the created order, as well as those who may not yet believe in God but value absolute truth, know that mankind was created male and female. For such families in California, they now live in a state whose legislature has declared, by unanimous Democratic consensus, that those convictions are irrelevant.

Perhaps the most chilling aspect of this vote isn’t the bill itself but the unanimity. In a body of 56 Democratic legislators, not one person looked at this bill and thought of the children. Not one considered the long-term medical consequences. Not one was willing to be the voice that said: this goes too far.

That absence of dissent should trouble every American, regardless of political affiliation or where one resides. When an entire political caucus moves as one to advance procedures that permanently alter the bodies of minors, something has gone deeply wrong not just politically, but morally.

The church must speak clearly where culture has gone silent and Christians in California and across the nation are called to pray for the children affected by legislation like this, to support families who are fighting for their kids, and to elect representatives who understand that protecting children isn’t merely a political position but a moral imperative rooted in the image of God.

AB 1876 will now move forward in the California legislative process and Christians would do well to watch, pray, and get activated.
