Teen Swims 4 Hours to Save Family, ‘God Got Me to Shore’

In a remarkable display of courage, 13 years old Austin Appelbee has been hailed as a hero after swimming four hours through treacherous waters to save his family from a life-threatening ordeal off the coast of Western Australia.
The Appelbee family’s vacation day turned into a fight for survival when strong winds and currents swept them nearly 9 miles offshore during what was supposed to be a paddleboard outing in Geographe Bay near Quindalup. Austin, his mother Joanne, 12-year-old brother Beau, and 8-year-old sister Grace found themselves clinging to paddleboards in cold, choppy waters with rescue seeming increasingly unlikely.

Facing the terrifying reality that time was running out, Joanne made the heart-wrenching decision to send her son on a solo mission back to shore to alert authorities. Without hesitation, Austin plunged into the waves for what would become a four-hour endurance test.
The teen even discarded his life jacket midway through the swim when it began slowing him down, leaving him completely exposed in waters known to be frequented by sharks. Battling exhaustion, cold, and fear, Austin drew on a source of strength that he accredits with helping him survive.
“I don’t think it was actually me,” Austin shared in interviews. “It was God the whole time. I kept on praying, kept on praying.”
Throughout the swim, Austin repeated to himself, “just keep swimming” while praying continuously. In those desperate moments, he made a promise to God that if he survived, he would get baptized.
When his feet finally touched the shore, he collapsed before gathering the strength to sprint a mile or more to find help. Upon calling the authorities, an immediate helicopter rescue operation was initiated, one that successfully located and saved Joanne, Beau, and Grace after their 10-hour ordeal in the water.
All four family members were treated for minor injuries and hypothermia but made full recoveries. Rescue personnel described Austin’s achievement as “superhuman,” though the teenager has consistently deflected praise, he has instead crediting his faith for carrying him through the impossible.
“He’s an absolute champion,” said one rescue coordinator. “What this young man accomplished is nothing short of extraordinary.”
True to his word, Austin is now planning to follow through on the promise he made in the water, to be baptized.
The Appelbee family is now safely reunited and undoubtedly, they’ll be forever changed by an experience that could have ended in tragedy but instead became a powerful story of survival, sacrifice, and unwavering faith in God.
When asked about his incredible feat, Austin remains characteristically humble: he simply did what needed to be done, and gave credit where he felt it was due.
