Self-Defense, It’s a Biblical Right

Whilst the right to defend your life, your family, and the innocent is up for debate amongst politicians, it is a non-negotiable gift stamped into creation by Almighty God Himself.
From the moment Cain murdered Abel, God made it crystal clear: human life is sacred because it bears His image (Genesis 9:6), and those who shed innocent blood forfeit their own.
Scripture doesn’t mince words on this subject. In Exodus 22:2–3, there are explicit instructions that a homeowner who kills a nighttime intruder bears no guilt. Why? Because God understands that evil doesn’t politely knock and announce its intentions, it comes barging in, seeking to dominate and destroy.
When we read the law of Moses, which was given by God directly, it clearly outlines how the defender is the one who should receive protection and not the aggressor against him.
Another example is seen in Nehemiah’s men who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem with a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other (Nehemiah 4:17–18). And then there’s David who never apologized for being armed, and even Jesus commanded His disciples, “Let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one” (Luke 22:36).
God saw it necessary to put all of these examples in the Bible so that we would be prepared to tackle any real danger that may arise in a fallen world.
A key to understanding all the lessons we can learn from God’s Word about self-defense boil down to this principle: God entrusts us with properly stewarding the lives He has given to us. Therefore, when tyrants, thugs, or home invaders threaten to snuff out those lives, the godly response isn’t pacifist surrender but righteous resistance.
Romans 13 couldn’t be clearer: government exists as God’s servant, “an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer” and bears “the sword” for that very purpose (Romans 13:4). This means that when we see rulers choose to turn that sword against law-abiding citizens (when they pass “red flag” laws without due process, ban weapons designed for self-defense, or criminalize the very means God’s people have historically used to protect the vulnerable), they are no longer acting as servants of God. But rather, they have become instruments of wickedness by inverting their divine mandate.
Make no mistake, politicians who aggressively pursue civilian disarmament aren’t merely “misguided,” they are actively opposing the Creator’s design for human society. They believe that the state should hold a monopoly on force while leaving the innocent citizenry defenseless against criminals, tyrants, and ideological mobs.
In no world could this be classified as justice for it is oppression that has been dressed up as compassion.
Scripture condemns such rulers in the strongest terms: “Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees… to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right” (Isaiah 10:1–2).
Believers, this is not the time for timid niceness or “both-sides” equivocation.
- When a candidate or sitting official campaigns on confiscation, “assault weapon” bans, or mandatory buybacks, recognize what you are seeing: a direct assault on a God-ordained right.
- When lawmakers strip law-abiding citizens of effective self-defense tools while violent crime skyrockets and repeat offenders walk free, understand that you are witnessing rulers who fear an armed populace more than they fear an armed criminal class.
- When bureaucrats push “common-sense gun laws” that only burden the righteous and embolden the lawless, call it what it is; a rebellion against God’s order.
Christians are commanded to be salt and light, not doormats. We pursue peace, yes, but we don’t hand our families over to evil men on the altar of political correctness.
We trust God for ultimate deliverance, but we don’t despise the practical means He has placed in our hands.
So equip yourselves, spiritually through fervent prayer and unwavering faith in Christ, and prudently through training, responsible ownership, and readiness to protect the vulnerable. And then, make the crucial next step: support candidates and policies that honor God’s design rather than defy it.
When you see leaders who claim to fear God while working tirelessly to leave His people defenseless, call them out plainly. Such persons aren’t your allies, they aren’t neutral, they are actively aligned against the biblical vision of a free, just, and God-honoring society.
