Israel Takes Action to Prevent Syrian Massacre - Revival Nation - Blog

In a troubling turn of events, Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda leader, has started committing violence against minority groups, including Christians and Druze in As-Suwayda.

Al-Sharaa’s men have brutally attacked fellow believers in Christ, as well as Druze, humiliating them by cutting their beards and murdering them en masse, which only demonstrates the Syrian leader’s unchanged jihadist mentality.

The Druze, an Arabic-speaking religious and ethnic minority primarily found in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, previously found relative peace under the previous Assad regime, despite being known for its own set of atrocities. The same could not always be said about Christians in Syria who, under the Assad regime, faced countless persecutions.

Although data is limited, a 2016 report by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom noted that whilst Assad’s government didn’t explicitly target Christians as a policy, its actions, such as indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas including Christian areas, contributed to their suffering. By 2020, the Christian population in Syria had dropped from about 1.5 million pre-war to under 500,000, per estimates from Open Doors, due to violence, displacement, and emigration driven by both regime and rebel actions.

Father Tony Boutros, a representative of the Greek Catholic Church in Sweida, Syria, made an appeal to the international community to save Christians and Druze from an Islamist genocide, saying:

“We Christians and Druze are one. Look at the massacre they are committing against us. We need protection to continue living in the land we have peacefully lived together for hundreds of years.”

Israel, which is home to a significant Druze population of over 150,000, vowed to protect their Syrian brothers. When al-Sharaa’s forces resumed their offensive in As-Suwayda, employing a pincer movement and ignoring attempts at ceasefire, Israel acted quickly.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched over 160 strikes on Syrian regime targets, including the Ministry of Defense in Damascus and military targets in As-Suwayda, to put an end to the violence.

Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Damascus to withdraw, pointing to Israel’s commitment to the Druze. Not long after, Israel’s border zone collapsed into anarchy, with Syrian Druze trying to escape towards Israel and Israeli Druze crossing into Syria to aid their brothers. Meanwhile, the American response, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, was at first tepid but has since issued statements pointing to a shift in halting the violence.

Why Is Israel Standing for Religious Minorities?

Many remain puzzled as to the reason why Israel alone is acting against what they describe as a genocidal campaign, whilst other nations and the United Nations remain silent. For one, Israel’s move underscores its role as a defender of persecuted minorities throughout the region.

Second to this is its position as a defender of the free world. Israel stands in the East as a unique and critical ally safeguarding the West against Iran’s nuclear ambitions as we have recently seen.

Despite accusations and conspiracy by many political pundits which have consistently pushed antisemitic talking points since the Hamas attacks on October 7th, this intense situation taking place in real time highlights Israel’s priorities: active involvement in protecting vulnerable groups and regional threats amidst the many complexities of world politics.
