Hawley-Backed Declaration Mobilizes Christians to Defend Unborn Life

WASHINGTON — A new faith-centered declaration is calling Christians and elected officials across America to defend unborn children and renew the nation’s commitment to the sanctity of human life.
More than 50,000 Americans signed the “Declaration for Life” within hours of its public release, according to Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo. The four-page document was unveiled during the first annual Missouri Prayer Breakfast and is being distributed nationwide with assistance from several pro-life organizations.
Drafted by Hawley alongside pastors and spiritual leaders from multiple denominations, the declaration describes the right to life as the “most foundational” of all rights. It points to the Declaration of Independence, which lists life before liberty and the pursuit of happiness, arguing that neither freedom nor human flourishing can exist without protection for life itself.
The document grounds its appeal in Scripture, affirming that every person is made in God’s image and “fearfully and wonderfully made” from the womb. It further warns that societies flourish when human dignity is honored but decline when that conviction is abandoned.
Although the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs ruling overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion policy to elected lawmakers, the declaration says abortion remains widespread. It focuses especially on chemical abortion and calls upon Congress to ban the use of mifepristone for that purpose.
Hawley argued that state restrictions can be undermined when abortion drugs are mailed across state lines. He said Congress must stop “passing the buck” and take direct legislative action.
The Missouri senator previously introduced the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act, with companion legislation filed in the House by Representative Diana Harshbarger, R-Tenn. Neither measure has advanced to committee hearings.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, who joined Hawley at the announcement, said the Republican Party has lost clarity on the right to life. He urged pastors and congregations to fill that leadership vacuum.
The declaration represents more than a policy statement. It is a call for spiritual courage, challenging churches, citizens, and candidates of both parties to defend the vulnerable and hold public officials accountable.
For Christians, protecting innocent life is not merely political. It is a biblical responsibility that must be expressed through prayer, truth, and action.
