Nike Faces Investor Backlash as Culture-War Strategy Deepens Business Concerns - Revival Nation News - Blog

Nike is facing growing pressure from conservative investors who argue that the athletic giant’s embrace of progressive political causes has damaged its reputation and compounded its financial troubles.

Once among America’s most dominant consumer brands, Nike has reportedly lost more than $200 billion in market value from its peak. The company has also experienced layoffs, declining consumer enthusiasm, and removal from the S&P 100 index. Critics contend that Nike’s high-profile activism, from its partnership with Colin Kaepernick to campaigns involving transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, has driven away customers who once viewed the company primarily as a symbol of athletic excellence.

At Nike’s annual shareholder meeting, conservative advocates challenged the company’s relationship with organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project. Sophia Lorey, a former collegiate athlete and outreach director for the California Family Council, argued that Nike’s corporate policies conflict with its public commitment to women and girls.

Lorey cited Nike’s perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2026 Corporate Equality Index, saying it raises questions about company health plans and advocacy related to transgender medical procedures. She also accused the company of supporting policies that could weaken sex-based protections in women’s athletics.

“Nike has historically embraced the growth of women’s athletics,” Lorey said, before urging executives to demonstrate whether their promises to female competitors remain meaningful.

Bowyer Research similarly submitted a shareholder proposal questioning whether continued political involvement creates unnecessary risk. Nike opposed the proposal, drawing criticism from those who believe management failed to address its underlying concerns.

Not every analyst attributes Nike’s decline entirely to activism. Author Stephen Soukup said increased competition, deteriorating market conditions, and weakening sales in China have also played significant roles. Still, he noted a striking correlation between Nike’s political turn and its declining popularity among young men.

For faith- and family-minded consumers, the controversy reflects a broader corporate reckoning. Nike must now decide whether to continue advancing divisive cultural causes—or return its attention to athletes, products, and the customers who built its global brand.
