73% of Evangelicals Believe This Heresy

The most deceived generation in church history is also the least taught, and the two facts are connected.

 

There is a weakness in the modern church that no worship set can cover, and no conference can fix. It is spreading through congregations that love Jesus, that lift their hands, that give generously, that show up on Sunday with real hunger in their hearts.

 

It is a weakness so dangerous that the enemy has built his entire end-time strategy on it, since Jesus said the sign of the last days would be deception on a scale the world has never seen. “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” (Matthew 24:24)

 

I am talking about a church that has quit studying.

 

We have a generation of believers who can name every villain their favorite channel exposed this month and cannot tell you why it matters that Jesus is fully God and fully man, or what the Bible actually teaches about justification.

 

Here is the question I want to put in front of the Body of Christ. If a believer cannot recognize error without help, what happens the first time his favorite teacher is wrong? What happens when the man he trusts drifts? What protects him then? Who guards him when nobody is watching? Nobody.

 

Doctrine is a medical word

 

Start with the term, because most people have never had it defined for them.

 

Doctrine simply means teaching. The Greek word is didaskalia, and it refers to instruction, the content of what is taught. When Paul told Titus to “speak thou the things which become sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1), he was telling a young pastor to teach the right content. That is all doctrine is. Teaching. The things you have been taught about God, about Christ, about salvation, about the Spirit, about the last days. Doctrine is the filter through which we understand Scripture.

 

The word attached to it is where this gets good.

1: teaching that is healthy, whole, and free from injury or infection

 

2: the body of apostolic instruction that produces spiritual health in the one who receives it

 

Origin: Greek hugiaino, to be healthy, to be well, the root behind the English word hygiene, joined to didaskalia, teaching or instruction

 

Paul reached for a medical word. Hugiaino is the word Jesus used when He said, “They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick” (Luke 5:31). It is the word Luke used when the centurion’s servant was found “whole” (Luke 7:10), and when the father said the prodigal had been received “safe and sound” (Luke 15:27). It is the word John used when he wrote, “I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health” (3 John 2).

 

So when Paul writes about sound doctrine, he is writing about healthy teaching. Teaching that makes the believer well. Teaching that keeps infection out of the body.

 

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” (2 Timothy 4:3) They will not endure healthy teaching. Healthy food stops tasting good to a sick man.

 

“Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.” (Titus 1:9) Healthy teaching is the instrument that answers the deceiver.

 

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” (1 Timothy 4:16) Watch that verse. Paul attaches salvation itself, yours and your hearers’, to whether you take heed to the doctrine.

 

Doctrine is health. Doctrine is life. That means false doctrine is infection, and hygiene is what is needed to prevent infection. Sound doctrine is the immune system of the Body of Christ.

 

The numbers on an undefended church

 

The American Bible Society released State of the Bible: USA 2026, its sixteenth annual study, conducted with NORC at the University of Chicago in January of this year. Twenty-five percent of American adults are active Bible users, meaning they read Scripture somewhere between weekly and daily. Sixty-two percent do not read Scripture at all. And nearly half of weekly church attenders, forty-six percent of them, are not regularly engaging with Scripture on their own.

 

Half the people in your pews are living on what they hear from a platform once a week. Whatever the man or woman says is all they have.

 

Now look at what that produces. Ligonier Ministries and Lifeway Research publish the State of Theology survey, and their 2025 edition polled three thousand American adults. Among evangelicals;

 

• 53% agreed that everyone sins a little but most people are good by nature.
• Another 53% agreed that the Holy Spirit is a force and not a personal being.
• 47% agreed that God accepts the worship of all religions, including Judaism and Islam.

 

Evangelicals. Not the culture. Not the nones. The people who fill our churches.

 

And in the 2022 edition of that same survey;

 

• 73% of American evangelicals agreed with this statement: Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God.

 

That is Arianism. It is the exact heresy the church answered at Nicaea in 325 AD, and it is now the majority position of the American evangelical pew, held by people who would tell you with tears in their eyes that they love Jesus. They do love Him. They have simply never been taught who He is.

 

Pew Research Center found in 2018 that 62% of American adults hold at least one New Age belief, and among Christians the figure was 61%. Reincarnation, astrology, spiritual energy in physical objects, sitting comfortably inside a Christian profession, because nobody ever opened a Bible and showed them why those things cannot live in the same house as the gospel.

 

Jim Davis and Michael Graham, working with the sociologist Ryan Burge, documented in The Great Dechurching (2023) that roughly 40 million American adults who once attended church at least monthly now attend less than once a year, the largest and fastest religious shift in American history. And Gallup’s confidence in the church has fallen from 68% in 1975 to 33% in 2026, sitting near the all-time low of 31%.

 

The armor Paul described

 

Paul wrote the definitive passage on this, and most believers have read it a hundred times without seeing what it says.

 

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” (Ephesians 4:11-14)

 

God gave the fivefold ministry with a stated purpose, and the purpose is protection. Every gift, every office, every anointed man and woman standing in front of a congregation exists so that the saints will grow up and stop getting blown around.

 

Look at the language Paul uses for the danger. Tossed to and fro. Carried about. Every wind of doctrine. The sleight of men, and that describes a dice player’s trick, sleight of hand. Cunning craftiness. They lie in wait to deceive, which is the language of an ambush.

 

Now look at what he says the answer is. Knowledge of the Son of God. Maturity. The unity of the faith. Grown men and women who know what they believe. That is the protection God designed, and there is no substitute for it anywhere in the New Testament.

 

Doctrine is armor. When Paul listed the pieces in Ephesians 6, the sword he handed the believer was “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17), and he hung it on the belt of every soldier in the army, private and general alike. Heaven never issued a weapon that only the officers are allowed to carry.

 

The Word will protect us

 

Some of you have your guard up right now, and you have earned the right to it.

 

You grew up in a church where doctrine meant a cold man with a hard face who could parse a Greek verb and could not love his own children. You watched people wield theology as a weapon, split churches over the timing of the rapture, and treat every believer outside their tribe as an enemy of the cross. You have seen heresy hunters build entire ministries on tearing down blood-bought believers, and you noticed that the men shouting loudest about division were the ones causing most of it. When Paul listed heresy among the works of the flesh, he set it right beside “hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions” (Galatians 5:20), which means a man can be technically orthodox and still be committing the sin, because at its root it means splitting the body into factions.

 

That is all true, and I have said it publicly and will keep saying it. The abuse of a thing has never canceled the right use of it. A father who beat his children with a Bible did not prove the Bible dangerous. He proved that he was.

 

Paul told Timothy that the goal of his charge was “charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned” (1 Timothy 1:5). Love is the destination of doctrine. Any theology that arrives somewhere else took a wrong turn.

 

We must become Bereans

 

God’s answer to all of this is a small congregation in Macedonia.

 

Paul had just been run out of Thessalonica by a mob. He came to Berea, walked into the synagogue, and started preaching. Luke stops the narrative of Acts to hand these people a compliment from heaven:

 

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11)

 

More noble is eugenes, wellborn, and it came to describe a generous and open spirit that gives a fair hearing. Readiness of mind is prothumia, eagerness, appetite. These people came to church hungry. And searched is anakrino, which is a courtroom word. It means to examine, to interrogate, to sift a matter judicially, to cross-examine a witness.

 

The Bereans put the preaching of the apostle Paul on the witness stand and cross-examined it against the Word of God. The apostle Paul. And heaven’s one-word verdict on the people who fact-checked an apostle is noble.

 

Catch the balance, because this is where most believers fall off one side of the horse or the other. The Bereans did both things at once. They received with eagerness and they examined everything. Some Christians today receive everything and examine nothing, and they end up in a house where questions are treated as rebellion. Others examine everything and receive nothing, and they end up as an Absalom at the gate, becoming cynics and calling it discernment. The Berean holds an open hand and an open Bible at the same time.

 

And then look at verse twelve: “Therefore many of them believed.” The cross-examination ended in faith. They dug in to verify and they came up worshipping. Your discernment ought to end at an altar more often than it ends in a comment section. We must have sharper discernment today than at any other time in history.

 

The writer of Hebrews tells you how the ability to discern is acquired. “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:14) By reason of use. Discernment is a muscle, and a muscle grows only when the man does his own lifting. No preacher can lift for you.

 

What I am asking you to do

 

This is the assignment, and it is simple enough to start this week.

 

Read the Bible on your own, daily, in course, whole books at a time. God gave us sixty-six books and most believers spend their whole lives in three of them.

 

Learn the essentials well enough to state them out loud. Do this before you venture down rabbit holes like, The Book of Enoch or some other preacher’s best-selling book. Learn who Jesus is, fully God and fully man. What the cross accomplished. What the resurrection secures. How a man is justified. Who the Holy Spirit is, a divine Person you can grieve, obey, and know. What Scripture is and where its authority comes from. If you cannot explain those to a teenager at your kitchen table, you’re not ready to move on to anything else.

 

Test what you hear, including what you hear from me. “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21) Any man who is offended when you open your Bible to check him has told you everything you need to know about his house.

 

And if you are a leader, hear me as one who stands in this line with you. Which utensil are you handing out? If your people borrowed your discernment this year and never grew their own, you have made them dependent, and dependence collapses the day you are wrong or the day you are gone.

 

Teach the truth so clearly that error sounds foreign when your people hear it.

 

The church at Ephesus got graded by the risen Christ Himself, and He put this line in the report: “and hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars” (Revelation 2:2). Heaven rewards the very thing the unquestionable man calls rebellion. This does not mean that you become cynical ore mean spirited. It just means that you weigh everything with scripture.

 

Take the sword back. It belongs to you. “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” (1 Timothy 4:16)
