Bill Ending Shutdown, Ends Obamacare Abortion Funding

In a moment of national restoration, President Donald Trump put his signature on a vital bill late Wednesday, bringing to a close the longest government shutdown in American history after 43 grueling days.

This act of leadership delivered much-needed back pay to hundreds of thousands of federal workers, from air traffic controllers to Capitol Police, and reopened doors to essential services, easing the billions in economic hardships that had left families struggling with delayed food aid, healthcare access, and disrupted travel.

Yet amid this relief, a profound moral victory emerged for the sanctity of life.

Faithful pro-life champions celebrated the legislation’s firm stand against Democratic attempts to funnel taxpayer dollars into abortions via an extension of Obamacare subsidies.

As followers of Christ, we are called in Matthew 25:40 to defend “the least of these,” the innocent preborn, whose lives hang in the balance. This bill upholds that sacred duty by preserving the Hyde Amendment’s longstanding barrier against direct federal funding for most abortions, the strongest such protection since the tragic Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973.

President Trump, ever the steadfast leader, declared, “I just want to tell you the country has never been in better shape. We went through this short-term disaster with the Democrats because they thought it would be good politically. And it’s an honor now to sign this incredible bill and get our country working again.” His words echo biblical calls to stewardship and unity whilst reminding us that true governance seeks to protect the vulnerable.

The bipartisan package funds the government through January 30, blending three full-year appropriations with a continuing resolution. It was shepherded through the Senate on a 60-40 vote Monday, with eight Democrats joining with independents and all 52 Republicans, to end the stalemate.

The House followed suit, passing the bill 222-209 in a mostly partisan tally, with two Republicans and six Democrats crossing lines.

Senate Republicans secured this triumph by agreeing to a separate December vote on the Obamacare subsidies, a vote pro-life advocates predict will falter without the 60 Senate votes needed to override filibuster rules and breach Hyde protections.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has given no ground for such a compromise, fortifying the defense in the lower chamber.
