Pakistan Court Acquits Killers of Christian Couple Burned Alive Over False Blasphemy Charge

Pakistan’s Supreme Court overturned the death sentences of three men convicted in the 2014 lynching of a Christian couple burned alive after being falsely accused of blasphemy. Shahzad Masih and his pregnant wife, Shama Bibi, were brutally beaten by a Muslim mob before being thrown into a brick kiln and burned to death. They left behind three young children. Their killers are now free.

On November 4, 2014, the couple was murdered in Kot Radha Kishan, Punjab Province, following allegations they had desecrated pages of the Quran. Police initially registered a case against 660 suspects. In 2016, an anti-terrorism court sentenced five men to death. Appeals reduced that number to three. Now, all have been acquitted.

The Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan, concluded the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt due to inconsistencies in witness testimony and weaknesses in evidence. Christian attorney Basharat Masih, who attended the hearing, said the court identified critical deficiencies. Police records contradicted witness statements. Victims’ relatives could not clearly describe each defendant’s alleged role. During cross-examination, family members admitted that one of the accused named in the initial report was not even present during the attack.

“It is heartbreaking to see the remaining accused acquitted,” Masih said. “At the same time, the prosecution failed to present a legally sustainable case, and those deficiencies ultimately benefited the accused.”

Senior Christian lawyer Lazar Allah Rakha said the verdict reflects longstanding weaknesses in Pakistan’s criminal justice system. “In a case involving such an egregious crime, meticulous trial preparation, effective examination and cross-examination of witnesses, and a comprehensive legal strategy were essential,” he told reporters. “Deficiencies in these areas inevitably weakened the prosecution and contributed to the acquittals.”

This is not an isolated case. Pakistan’s Catholic Bishops’ Conference pointed to a recurring pattern of impunity in violence against religious minorities. In the 2009 Gojra attacks, at least 10 Christians were killed, and suspects were ultimately acquitted. In the 2013 Joseph Colony attack in Lahore, all 115 accused were acquitted due to insufficient evidence. In June 2024, a mob killed Nazir Masih Gill in Sargodha following blasphemy allegations; many of those arrested were later released.

Pakistan’s blasphemy laws are frequently misused to settle personal disputes, seize property, and target religious minorities. Although no one has been executed by the state under blasphemy statutes, accusations repeatedly spark mob violence and extrajudicial killings. Open Doors ranked Pakistan eighth on its 2026 World Watch List of countries where Christians face the most severe persecution.

Scripture speaks directly to this kind of injustice. Psalm 10:17-18 says, “You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed.” Proverbs 31:8-9 commands believers to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Shahzad and Shama died for their faith. Their children are orphans. Their killers walk free. But Romans 12:19 reminds us, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

Earthly courts may fail, but God sees every injustice. Pray for Pakistan’s persecuted Christians. Pray for these orphaned children. And trust that when earthly systems collapse, God’s justice remains.
