Mamdani Demands IDs to Shovel Snow Yet Fights Voter ID

When a historic blizzard covered New York City under 18 inches of snow, Mayor Zohran Mamdani launched an emergency hiring program for snow shovelers: $30 an hour, $45 after overtime, but buried in the fine print was a requirement that is impossible to ignore: applicants have to present no fewer than five forms of identification, including two passport-style photos, two original IDs with copies, and a Social Security card.

 

Mind you, this is the same mayor who, as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has consistently opposed voter ID requirements on the grounds that they create unfair barriers to participation. The contradiction doesn’t require much commentary, it speaks for itself.

 

The Hypocrisy Is Specific, Not General

 

To be precise about what’s being criticized here: this isn’t a broad attack on Mamdani for requiring ID at all. Employers, whether they be public or private, have legitimate reasons to verify identity and work eligibility. That’s not the issue. The issue is consistency of argument.

 

The political left, including Mamdani’s allies and his own party, have spent years making a very specific claims that requiring documentary proof of identity from citizens creates a discriminatory burden, one that disproportionately harms low-income Americans, people of color, and marginalized communities.

 

Without straying too far into this vein of the conversation, it must be stated that the rationale against voter ID by such persons in and of itself is incredibly racist and demoralizing and it appears as though no one has picked up on the blatant folly of this position!

 

This argument has been deployed aggressively against the federal SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

 

Yet in New York City, under this administration, those same communities must produce five identity documents, more than the SAVE Act would require, simply to qualify for temporary snow removal work. If the burden is genuinely insurmountable for voting purposes, it is at least equally insurmountable here. The logic cannot run in only one direction.

 

What the SAVE Act Actually Does

 

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act requires documentary proof of citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate when registering to vote in federal elections. Recently it passed the House and has the support of President Trump.

 

What’s humorous is how the same officials raising concerns over black and brown communities not being able to obtain ID for voting are simultaneously enforcing stricter documentation standards for a two-week shoveling job!

 

The Stronger Principle

 

There is a legitimate case for voter ID that doesn’t depend on partisan talking points, election integrity isn’t after all. Over 80% of Americans across party lines support requiring some form of identification to vote and nearly every peer nation require it!

 

The integrity of elections isn’t a partisan concern but a foundational one.

 

The Mamdani episode substantially weakens the most common argument that ID requirements are inherently and uniquely oppressive.

 

When a leftist mayor requires more documentation to shovel a sidewalk than federal law requires to register to vote, the “insurmountable burden” argument loses much of its force.
