“Communion Awakening”: A Grand Table Unites Thousands on National Mall

Gathered in the name of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, thousands of believers from diverse generations, denominations, and backgrounds converged on the National Mall in the nation’s capitol over the Labor Day weekend to partake in a sacred act of communion.
For 40 days prior, these Christians had individually observed the Lord’s Supper, preparing their hearts for Communion America, a groundbreaking event uniting the faithful in an unprecedented way.

The movement began with a powerful simulcast, Come To The Table Live | A National Communion Revival Broadcast, urging Christians to pray and fast in anticipation of October 9. On that day, over 50 tents, each representing a U.S. state, alongside the nation of Israel, Gen Z, First Nations, and Adoration, lined the Mall, hosting continuous worship through October 12.
This historic gathering aligned with the spiritually significant Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, October 6-13.
During the 2.5-hour Labor Day simulcast, Pastor Bill Johnson of California guided a global audience across three time zones in commemorating Christ’s body and blood.

“God is opening a divine door, and this communion revival is a moment of His unfolding purpose,” said David Bradshaw, founder of Awaken The Dawn, a ministry dedicated to round-the-clock worship, prayer, and mission.
Bradshaw, collaborating with prominent leaders and ministries, spoke of the event as God’s call to heal America’s wounds through the shared act of communion.

The timing of Communion America builds on last year’s gathering of women on the Mall, led by Laura Allred of A Million Women. “The unity across denominations and movements was a blessing to our nation,” Allred reflected.
“This is the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer for oneness in John 17.” She emphasized that when ministries prioritize God’s Kingdom over their own agendas, they become a formidable force for spiritual harvest.
The vision for Communion America emerged independently among multiple leaders, a clear sign of divine inspiration.
Jason Hershey, leader of David’s Tent DC, recalled a morning prayer session where Luke 24 sparked a revelation. The passage describes Jesus’ disciples, initially blind to His presence, recognizing Him as He broke bread. “We prayed that the American church would break bread together, and that Jesus would be revealed to our nation,” Hershey said. In his mind’s eye, he saw a massive banquet table spanning the National Mall, a vision echoed by others in his ministry.
Bradshaw, who hosted 1,700 worship teams on the Mall in 2017, is convinced this is God’s initiative, as every generation, race, and denomination responds to the call. Hershey noted the intimacy of the Passover Seder, chosen by Jesus to institute the Lord’s Supper, as a model for this gathering. “It’s about connection … with God and each other,” he said.

A special focus of Communion America is engaging Gen Z through Catalyst, a pre-event intensive that explored deeper spiritual truths, culminating in a Gen Z-led rally on Friday night.
Brian Barcelona, a Millennial leader of Gen Z For Jesus, saw this event as a defining moment for the younger generation, much like The Call was for him.
Joel Mott, co-founder of California Will Be Saved, shared a recent experience of preaching the Gospel to over 3,000 people on a beach, where communion led to profound moments of deliverance. “A young woman, planning to end her life, heard the Gospel and was transformed,” Mott said. “This is what happens when we honor Jesus’ blood.”
Intercessory prayer leader Dutch Sheets pointed to Genesis 14, where Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abraham, as a prophetic foreshadowing of communion.
“This gathering on the Mall declares Christ’s victory over darkness, proclaiming that America belongs to God,” Sheets said, viewing it as a catalyst for a Third Great Awakening.
Revivalist Lou Engle shared a 2009 dream set in Redding, California, where Pastor Bill Johnson spoke of fishing where the river “turns red.” Engle interpreted this as God releasing a “river of the sacrament,” sparking salvation wherever it flows. “I call it the ‘redding’ of America,” he said.
From Redding, Johnson led the simulcast’s communion, emphasizing its profound impact. “Every time we partake of Christ’s body and blood, God shows up,” he said, noting how Ephesians describes Jesus’ sacrifice breaking down divisions. Through this shared act, believers find healing and unity.
