Is China Watching You? Florida’s AG Is Looking For Answers
Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has issued a subpoena to Lorex Corp., a major producer of baby monitors and security cameras, seeking details on its corporate ties, potential links to Chinese Communist Party-affiliated firms, and risks to American data privacy.
The investigation aims to uncover whether Lorex is rebranding products from Dahua, a Chinese company banned in the U.S. for alleged human rights violations and national security concerns.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office has suspected Lorex imports devices from Dahua, which was blacklisted by the Pentagon in 2022 for ties to the Chinese military and by the Commerce Department in 2020 for reported involvement in Uighur forced labor.
Dahua owned Lorex until 2021, when it was sold to Taiwan-based Skywatch. The subpoena, issued by Uthmeier’s office on Friday, demands records on Lorex’s ownership, manufacturing contracts, software origins, and data security practices.
Uthmeier issued a public warning online, stating that Lorex products could expose sensitive consumer data, like baby monitor footage, to the Chinese government, calling it a grave national security issue. He also urged other states and the Trump administration to join the probe, citing broader concerns about Chinese surveillance tech infiltrating U.S. markets.

This scrutiny aligns with growing federal and state alarm over Chinese cyber-espionage.
Recent reports have emerged that highlight there is hidden code in the AI tool DeepSeek, as well as claims of Chinese access to TikTok user data. Due to the various risks coming forward, Senator Rick Scott has proposed the ‘Drones for America Act’ which seeks to phase out Chinese-made drones by 2031, whilst Senator Tom Cotton has brought forward the ‘LEAD Act’ to protect American dominance in international drone manufacturing.
