20 African Nations Unite to Defend Family, Life, and Sovereignty

Twenty African countries have endorsed a landmark charter asserting their right to protect unborn life, traditional marriage, national sovereignty and African cultural values amid growing concern over Western influence on the continent.

Formally supported during a conference in Accra, Ghana, the African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values establishes principles covering marriage, abortion, agriculture, trade, natural resources and participation in international agreements.

The charter defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman and recognizes human beings as male or female. According to the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, Article 7 rejects efforts to establish abortion as an international right under the banner of “sexual and reproductive health.”

Another provision calls on participating governments to review and remove laws viewed as harmful to the family. The charter also opposes the legalization of prostitution and policies advancing transgender ideology.

Supporters say the agreement will help African nations resist pressure tied to foreign aid, diplomacy and international treaties.

SPUC Chief Executive John Deighan praised the participating countries for challenging attempts to impose liberal Western values on developing nations.

“It is a joy to see 20 good and moral nations fighting back despite the likely financial punishments they’ll receive,” Deighan said. He added that authentic development should not be equated with liberalized abortion laws or the dismantling of traditional family structures.

Beyond social policy, the charter urges African governments to protect indigenous seeds and farmer-managed agricultural systems. It also calls for greater national control over natural resources, reduced dependence on exporting unprocessed commodities and fewer barriers to trade between African countries.

The document further warns that African representatives are sometimes given complicated international agreements without adequate time to evaluate their consequences.

South Africa and Mozambique did not endorse the charter. South Africa reportedly cited conflicts with constitutional protections, including the country’s legal recognition of same-sex marriage.

The charter’s adoption comes amid growing resistance to Western influence over Africa’s social and ethical policies. Guinean Catholic Cardinal Robert Sarah has similarly accused the European Union of pursuing a neocolonial agenda by pressuring African nations to embrace Western views on abortion, sexuality and family life—underscoring the charter’s broader call for Africa to defend its faith, values and national sovereignty.
