Russell Brand Praying In Public & Speaking In Tongues?

“Is it OK to pray in public?” and “What about speaking in tongues?” were two questions posed by comedian Russell Brand.

A recent convert to Christianity, Brand isn’t afraid to ask the tough, and sometimes denominationally controversial, questions about the faith.

Excitedly, Russell shared on X how he’s “been speaking in tongues. I’ve been praying in tongues… I thought, ‘Anyone can do that, it’s just babbling incoherent nonsense.’ But I’ve been doing it.”

The statement that this heavenly gift is merely “babbling” is innocent, as well as common amongst those who are at the beginning of their faith walk or initially encountering the practice.

Speaking in tongues isn’t “babbling” by any means; it is a legitimate spiritual gift and manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer as seen in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 which says:

“To one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge… to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.”

Private or Public Prayer Language?

Russell states that “praying in tongues … seems like some private thing,” and he’s right! Not only is praying in tongues highly significant in edifying the believer as stated in 1 Corinthians 14:4 but it is also an important way in connecting with God through our personal prayer time.

“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.” 1 Corinthians 14:4

“Do you think it’s okay to pray publicly?” Brand asked. The second portion of 1 Corinthians 14:4 provides the answer, and it is, yes!

This is the portion of Scripture that many today focus in on, ignoring the first part of the verse, believing that speaking in tongues, whether it be public or private, must be accompanied by interpretation.

Clearly, this isn’t truth.

Publicly speaking in tongues where there is an interpreter edifies the church body.

This is just one example from Scripture where speaking in tongues is clearly meant for both private AND public prayer!

Brand ended his video stating, “Praying together and preaching His word and bringing people together is so important… Let me know what you think about praying in public and the intimacy and privacy of our prayer, but also the necessity of evangelism.”

Another question many bring up is whether or not any Christian can speak in tongues, for the answer to this, we glean from Acts 2 where ALL the apostles were gathered together and were ALL filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues!

This manifestation was then followed by publicly preaching!

So can any believer be filled by the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues? Yes, absolutely, despite what some teachings at this point in time say, God’s Word is clear on the matter.

Conclusion

God’s Word is absolute truth, so when we read about praying in tongues being conducted in public and in private, we can trust that which we read!

In a world where there is division amongst so many denominational structures, the humility coming from Brand isn’t just refreshing but it is something we can all learn from.

His sincerity and openness of heart is key when approaching God’s Word, and we are guaranteed that when we seek God we will find Him whether it be on this matter or on another (Jeremiah 29:13).

Brand’s pure pursuit of truth is just as refreshing for believers in the beginning stages of their faith walk, as it is for those who have been in the trenches for decades.

Never stop asking questions. Never stop going deeper into God’s Word. Never cease in being full of of humility.

New believers are full of excitement for the new life found in Christ, let this be an encouraging reminder to us all of the joy of our salvation!
